Idea

I lied.
My idea was not a light bulb kind of idea. It has been growing in the depths of my imagination for years. Part of it comes from my childhood and the reason I grew to love trains, part of it comes from my desire to make things out of what I already have, and the rest comes from... well, the things I already have!

My inspiration for this layout is Swiss railroads.  Specifically, the Zurich Haubtbahnhof and the Landwasser Viaduct.

Zurich is near and dear to me because that is the gateway through which I entered and exited the country many times while growing up. I vividly remember leaving the airport through that long, dark tunnel then moving through the city along a stone viaduct. The viaduct slowly rose to a bridge crossing the large rail yard, feeding into Zurich main station (Zurich Haubtbahnof). After stopping in Zurich the train continued by reversing direction, going through the rail yard, past the freight station (Guterbahnhof), and through a cement underpass (under the line we came in on).

Now, I could not have a layout without a magnificent bridge. No, that would be a terrible sin. So, I searched for a nice bridge that I could build from materials on hand. I didn't want to purchase a ton of metal shapes or things like that, so a viaduct seemed simple, with no small rods or cables. I chose the Landwasser Viaduct because I loved the unique feature of going into the mountain  immediately from the viaduct.

I then designed a layout that could run around my cubicle based on these two features. Next time, I will show how I designed my layout. Read about it HERE.

Thanks for reading,
